Southern Fulton School District Work Session

District Report

 

Positions

 

As of August 21 the following positions will be filled by substitutes until interviews are completed: 1) special education teacher (selected candidate withdrew); and 2) special education aide at elementary.

 

Several qualified internal candidates have applied for the secretarial position vacated by Connie Mellott. Interviews will take place on Friday, August 24. Time TBD.

 

Bus Driver and Contractor In-Service

 

This year the annual meeting with the contractors will be expanded to include drivers. Dr. Gilliland, Mrs. Trail, and Mrs. Younker will also participate to discuss driver concerns and bus discipline.

 

 

 

High School Report

 

 

Opening of School

 

I believe that we are ready for a smooth opening to the 2007-2008 school year.  The handbooks are here from the printer and will be ready with any addenda.  The students should have received their schedule by the end of this week in the mail.  All other organizational tasks are prepared as well.

 

PSSA Rewards

 

In order to celebrate the success of the eighth graders on the PSSA last spring, Mr. Leese will be chaperoning 95 of this year’s eighth and ninth grade students to the Hancock Park/Pool for the day on August 31, 2007.  This was approved last year. The students had to have been proficient or advanced in both reading and math to get invited.  Letters and permission slips were sent out to the parents.   They will leave at 8:15 a.m. on Friday, August 31, and return at approximately 3:00 p.m.  During their day they will have the opportunity to play volleyball, kickball, and swim.  We are also trying to get the Hancock Police Department to do a demonstration for them such as the K-9 dog.  This has been budgeted and approved.

 

Thirty-eight of last year’s eleventh graders scored advanced and proficient in both reading and math.  These students are invited to take a trip to the beach at Ocean City.  They will be leaving Sunday, September 9 and returning Tuesday night the 11th.  They will miss two days of school and this was budgeted and approved last year.

 

PSSA Plans to Improve the Scores

 

Mr. Hollenshead, Mr. Leese, Mrs. Layton, Mrs. Younker, Mr. Sholes and I looked over the tentatively released scores and planned some strategies for this year. 

 

Changes include: Continuation of the PSSA classes this year, addition of PSSA Activities for Activity periods for those not scoring proficient, structured study halls in the junior high with teachers focusing on PSSA work, and addition of PSSA Tutor to pull students from other study halls to work on PSSA Materials, etc.

 

Seventh Grade Orientation

 

Seventh Grade Orientation was held on August 21 from 12:00 – 7:30.  Parents were able to meet and greet the teachers and go through the students’ schedules as well as practice opening lockers.

 

Open House

 

On Thursday, August 30, 2007, there will be an Open House at the High School from 7:00-8:30 p.m.  The faculty will provide information on the specific course and their grading procedure.  There is not enough time on this evening to conduct parent/teacher conferences.

7:00-7:10-All students and parents should meet in the auditorium for an introduction.

7:15-7:20 -1st period   

7:23-7:28- 2nd period

7:31-7:36- 3rd period

7:39-7:44- 4th period

7:47-7:52- 5th period

8:11-8:16-8th period

BUILDING USAGE:

 

Tana Mellott has requested usage of the cafeteria on Sunday, October 7, 2007 for a basket bingo to raise funds for a student of Southern Fulton High School who has medical necessities and inflating costs.

Elementary Report

 

Accountability Block Grant

 

We are receiving an additional $8, 283.00 for our full day kindergarten program; therefore, we will be receiving a total of $176, 701.00 for the 07-08 school year.

 

Bullying Prevention Training

 

All teachers will be trained regarding the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program during one of the in-service days.  This program will be implemented later this school year.

 

School Improvement

 

On Monday, August 13, an in-service was held for teachers regarding school improvement. The teachers were able to analyze the current test data and then begin an action plan for school improvement. This will be an on-going process throughout the school year.

 

Environmental and Ecology Standards

 

Patricia Vathis from PDE facilitated a workshop for teachers on Tuesday, August 14, to align the science standards to our curriculum. This was necessary in making sure that the science standards was being covered throughout the grades especially since students are now tested on a state science test.

 

Nature Trail

 

Greg Reinke, from the Fulton County Conservation District, has been working on building a 40-foot table by the pond. This will be helpful when students are doing a pond study, etc.

 

 

 

 

Grandparent Luncheon

 

A grandparent luncheon is scheduled for Friday, September 7.  Last year’s luncheon was a huge success.

 

Penn State Basketball Clinic

 

On Thursday, September 6, an assembly on bullying prevention is scheduled.  After school, from 3:15 – 4:30, Penn State will hold a basketball clinic for interested students in grades 3-8; however, all of this is tentative depending on the number of students that sign up.

 

Pre-K Counts Grant

 

I received word at the beginning of August that we are not being awarded the Pre-K Counts Grant. Seventy-five million was allotted for the program; however, the Office of Child Development and Early Learning received applications worth over 137 million dollars.

Federal Programs Report

 

I received word from PDE, that we received an additional $2, 076.00 for getting the academic achievement award. This award is distributed to Title I buildings meeting Adequate Yearly Progress.

 

 

 

Facilities Manager Report

 

Updates

 

Seal coat has been done on parking lots. They need to return to finish parking lot lines that were missed.

 

The gym floor is finished except for the volleyball sleeves and plates.

 

Except for a few “odd and ends” the summer cleaning is about wrapped up for both buildings.

Technology Specialist Report

 

TIU WAN Project

 

The wireless tower was installed onto the ES building roof by the gym.  Originally, one was to be installed at the HS; however, it was decided to use a fiber optic cable instead.  The Fiber cable is in the process of being installed.  Final implementation is still waiting for eRate approval.

 

Strategic Plan Update

 

Our Student Services Plan has been sent back to us for revisions.  I’m working on the necessary updates and will have them completed by the August 31, 2007, deadline.  However, I have sent PDE an email asking for an extension since we are in the process of having all our policies reviewed which might affect our Student Services Plan document.

 

PowerSchool Server

 

The server that PowerSchool is installed on has what appears to be a hardware problem.  As of 9:00 a.m. this morning (8/21) I’ve been on the phone with Gateway technical support.  I’ll have a further update at the meeting but as of now PowerSchool is not available.
