Only one provider attended the mandatory meeting/walkthrough: Metz & Associates, Ltd. As such, Metz was the only company eligible to submit an RFP for our food service management. Their proposal will be on the May agenda for Board consideration.

Meeting at PDE

The superintendent attended a meeting with the Dr. Zahorchak, the Secretary of Education, on April 13. One topic of discussion was the proposed Keystone Exams.

Budget Process

It is hopeful the stimulus package monies will become more stable in the next few weeks as districts build their budgets. Administrative budget meetings are set to begin on April 27 and conclude by May 8. Open dates for the Board budget meeting are Tuesday May 12, Thursday, May 14, and Friday, May 15.

AlertNow Training

High School Report

Scholastic Scrimmage

The SFHS is on an excellent ride with the PA State Scholastic Scrimmage Competition. Mr. Sholes is the advisor for this program and the students involved with the competition are Elaina Truax, Daniel Wolfe, Ellie Mundale, Steven Meyer and Nathan Keebaugh.  They are competing in the state finals on April 28 in State College at 1:30 p.m. The team has already won 4 matches and currently is the highest scoring team in the tournament.  This team of stars has been invited to attend the National Championship in Chicago, IL on May 29-31.  They have spent countless mornings practicing for these competitions so if you see them, please applaud their efforts.

NHS/NSJHS

The NHS is participating in Relay for Life on May 29-30, to support the American Cancer Society.  They are doing several district-wide fundraisers in attempts to have a successful campaign; examples include:  Dress-down day, Easter Basket raffle, and activities during “Decades Week.”  The members are working very hard to raise money for this great cause.

Science PSSAs

The science PSSAs are scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, and Wednesday, April 29, for the science PSSAs. This test is given to all 8th and 11th graders.  There are 2 sections for the 8th graders and 3 sections for the 11th graders.  Hopefully, this assessment will not be as stressful for our students, as the length is much shorter than the PSSAs that were given in March.

Diploma Recovery Program

There has been two people complete the program this year and there is another in the process of completing the program.  I have received several calls for information regarding the program.  A huge thank you to Joe Hollenshead for his math help!!!!!

Guidance Update

  • The scheduling process is under way.  It is our goal to have student requests loaded and have a mock “walk-thru” of next year’s schedule take place on June 5.
  • SATs will be given at SFHS on May 2.
  • Local scholarship information has been delivered to all of the seniors and applications are being returned and submitted.
  • Decision Day is May 1.

In-House College Advisor – Keystone College Advising Corps

Mr. Lund continues to be a great resource for SFHS.  He is doing amazing things with our students to promote post-secondary education and the importance of career development.

The big event that is coming up that Mr. Lund is working very hard on; in conjunction with Mrs. Solomon is the National Decision Day on May 1.  Friday, May 1, at 10:30 a.m. in the SFHS gymnasium, we will begin the celebration of our seniors.  Mr. Lund is planning several events for this day, which is honoring those high school seniors who have decided upon their post-secondary plans.  He is in the process of inviting the press (newspapers and WHAG-TV), the county commissioners, MEI employees and other community members.  (Press release is attached.)

Prom

The Junior-Senior prom is being held on Saturday, May 9 at the McConnellsburg American Legion from 7:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.  The theme is Arabian Nights and the prom court has been selected as follows:  Chelsey Hollenshead, Elaina Truax, Brooke Whiteside, Josh Hall, Andrew Merica, Jesse Smart, Ally Barnhart, Carissa Gordon, Rachel Norris, Carlos Calderon, Dylan Whiteside, and Derek Younker.

District 5 Scholarship Winners

Every year the District 5 athletic directors select four scholarship winners based on scholastic and athletic achievement.  Applications are given to every District 5 school and this year the winners each received $750.  It is with great pride that I am happy to announce that Southern Fulton High School had two (2) of the four (4) winners this year.  This is the first time any SFHS student, has received this scholarship. Chelsey Hollenshead and Jesse Smart were the honorees at a banquet held on Wednesday, April 15, where they read their winning essays and received their awards. Congratulations!

Once again, I am SF proud!

Federal Programs Report

Title I monitoring will take place on Wednesday, April 22, from a representative from PDE.

A family math night was held this evening regarding the Math 24 Game.

The Title I Grant for stimulus funds is due May 15. This is a very involved process. Southern Fulton SD is to receive $88,705 in Title I stimulus money. The district will be contacted or monitored every two months to see how the money is being used. We have to keep excellent records in regards to the number of students, teachers, and classrooms the money is affecting. Stimulus funds must be kept separately from other Title I money. Out of 12 options, our district is only eligible to apply for about 5 options because we are considered “targeted assisted” instead of “schoolwide.”

Facilities Manager Report

Update

Labor and Industry has approved the final phase of the high school roof project as a maintenance project. The district will not be charged prevailing wage. At the time of this report the savings have not been calculated yet.
