District Report

Bus Driver and Contractor In-Service

This year the annual meeting with the contractors will be expanded to include drivers. Mrs. Hendershot, Mr. Shade, and Mrs. Younker will also participate to discuss driver concerns and bus discipline.

Grant Opportunity

Southern Fulton has an opportunity to partner with two other districts for a science grant. The grant will focus on what is called “STEMS”; i.e., science, technology, engineering, and mathematics curricula. The grant has the potential of more than $1,000,000 in funding for the three districts.

Budget

The state budget is still in limbo. If any version of SB850 is passed, the district will face a “hole” of almost $600,000 in the school year 2011-2012.

News Conference

Representatives from Southern Fulton have been invited to attend Gov. Rendell’s news conference on Wednesday, August 19, at which he will announce that Pennsylvania is the only state which made significant gains in student achievement in every year from 2002 to 2008. Southern Fulton was invited as one of the top 50 districts in the state to show improvement. Mrs. Trail, Mr. Don Whiteside, and I will be in attendance.

In-Service

Teacher and staff in-services are set for Thursday, Friday, and Monday; August 20, 21, and 24. Topics include curriculum work, suicide intervention, CPR training, anti-bullying training, crisis intervention, and other topics.

Thank-you

The beginning of another school year is both a challenge and an opportunity. This past summer the administrators and our office and maintenance staffs have once again done superlative work in preparing for the 2009-2010 year, and I thank them for everything they have done for our students and teachers.

High School Report

7th Grade/New Student Orientation

August 18 there will be 7th grade/new student orientation at the high school from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m.  All 7th graders and new students have been invited to attend the orientation.  Activities during this time include:  building tour, locker procedures and cafeteria scan.

Open House

Open House is scheduled for August 27, 2009 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.  We will follow a mock schedule of the day.  Refreshments will be provided.

Dual Enrollment Grant/Program – Education Foundation

Allegany College of Maryland will be offering Psychology and History this year at Southern Fulton High school.  The teacher is scheduled to be Todd Hoffner.  However, due to the budget issues, currently the Dual Enrollment Program has been eliminated from the state budget.  Therefore, there is no money in the grant system as of Monday, August 17, 2009.

The Bedford County Regional Education Foundation has previously received donations through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit program.  Businesses contribute through this state program and instead of paying taxes directly to Harrisburg, they are able to divert the taxes to educational programs.  The Foundation has used these donations to fund Early College tuition in the past.  However, this is also a program which may be cut from the state budget.  Therefore, without knowing if donations will be received, the Foundation just made a decision to utilize monies remaining in our Early College account for the Fall 2009 semester.  This means that each Early College student will receive a tuition assistance award in the amount of $35.00 per credit for the first three credits taken during the Fall 2009 semester.  The Foundation has approximately 375 early College students they support in numerous school districts.   The Foundation realizes that this amount of funding is less than semesters past but can only provide money that is on hand to students.

If the state cuts the part of the Educational Improvement Program that our Foundation can received funding from, then there will likely be no foundation support in the Spring 2010.

Basically, students will need to pay $75/credit, plus books and fees.
