AP Academy

The IU is proposing to organize and run an AP Academy for all districts so that all students across the IU11 region have access to AP courses in the four core areas of:  AP English Lit, AP Biology, AP Us History, and AP Calculus.  To accomplish this, select teachers from various districts will begin their training this summer and prepare for the pilot implementation the next school year.  Teachers may come from any of our nine districts.  The course will be delivered via videoconferencing and/or a combination of other virtual approaches to education.  The 2011-2012 school year will be a planning year with teachers and administrators who will organize each of the courses for delivery in the fall of 2012.  Justin Sholes is the teacher from SFHS that will be participating.

7th Grade Orientation/Open House

On Wednesday, August 10 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. the high school will be open for incoming 7th graders to take another tour of the building, pick up their schedules and set up their lockers prior to the beginning of the school year.  In previous years, the National Honor Society has participated in this event, serving as tour guides and “helpers” for the younger students.

Meeting School Psychologist

On July 11th I will meet with Mrs. Thompson as well as the new psychologist in McConnellsburg to review our protocol as well as to find what supplies and materials will be needed for the psychologist.  A list was provided to both Central Fulton and Southern Fulton on the tests that are needed to carry out the evaluations within our districts.

IDEA-B and ARRA-IDEA Fiscal Reporting Training

This is a mandatory training for all school districts in the state of PA.  I attended with the business manager on July 12, 2011. Stimulus guidelines are not going away and accountability piece for Special Education Funds will remain.

FBA Training (Functional Behavior Assessment)

On July 20, 2011 the TIU #11 will provide training at the elementary school from 8:30 – 3:30.  FBA training is required to make sure that our district is in compliance with changes in the requirements.  As a school district we must do what it takes to make sure we are following all state mandates.  A functional behavior assessment is always required when there are mental health, behavioral issues, and/or if a student is involved in a physical altercation.

Forbes Road School District and Central Fulton School District special education staff were extended an invitation to join our training if it is something they are interested in.

Special Education Leadership Conference

I will be attending the conference at Bedford Springs Resort from July 25 - 28.  All expenses associated with this conference are covered by me.  This is the only conference that is solely focused on initiatives associated around special education and the roles that leaders of special education need to maintain.

MP3 Player Bundle

On June 28, 2011 I received four MP3 Players in the mail.  Pennsylvania Department of Education picked up the tab for these devices as an incentive to demonstrate how technology can assist students with disabilities.

Special Olympics

On June 18, 2011 I meet with a team who are attempting to establish Special Olympics in Fulton County.  Bocce ball is the first sport they will attempt.  Training for coaches will be on August 3rd in McConnellsburg and we are to attempt to recruit coaches and helpers.  Also, on August 11, 2011 at 6:30 will be registration day for children and adults who have cognitive disabilities.  A grant was awarded and five bocce fields will be created free of charge through the grant. Southern Fulton is slated to receive two courts.
